Do Metal Roofs Affect Cell Signal? Credit: Īre metal roofs bad for cell phone reception? Many people wonder if a metal roof is to blame for their poor cell phone reception at home. A utility pole may come into contact with your wires if it is located near a home or business with metal roofs. The misinformation is most likely motivated by the fact that a metal roof can aggravate existing service issues. Metal roofs, contrary to popular belief, do not interfere with cell phone service. Furthermore, they will improve data speeds by improving the cell signal to a hotspot or cellular router. These systems can increase the signal indoors, allowing one or more cell phones to communicate with one another. It is critical to remember that a weak cell signal does not always result from a metal roof.Ī cellular signal booster system installed in a metal building is the most convenient way to increase the signal of a cellular phone inside the building. Poor signal may occur if wood or shingles are thick or if shingles are too thin. ![]() Although outdoor areas are the best place to locate a cell phone reception point, you won’t be able to use your phone that way just outside. Roof tiles and other roofing materials can also interfere with your cell signal. As a result, a weakened radio frequency and cell signal are produced. The metal roof is almost as if it were a shield that protects nearby utility towers from disruption. If your roof is reflective, it may cause your phone reception to degrade. If you still can’t get a signal, you can try a cell signal booster. If it is, you can try to move your phone to a different location or add an external antenna. Ideally, the Cell Booster works best when the outside signal is 1, 2 bars at best and you are set for LTE. If you have it set to 5G, and your incoming 5G signal is variable, that will "confuse" the phone even further. Speaking of LTE, the Cell Booster is LTE only so you should be keeping your phones on LTE. Even when we go to our friend's house across town, who have AT&T, we use their WiFi connection for WiFi-C and it works just fine. ![]() So for us, we just leave WiFi-C and WiFi enabled all of the time and keep our phones on LTE (because 5G is unreliable in our area). The other 5% of the time the outside signal will hit 3 bars and the phones will use that.
